A Journey to Financial Freedom
When I hit the age of 20, I daringly resolved to become a millionaire, despite my modest upbringing. However, let me be clear, making such a decision was merely the initial stride on a lengthy and intricate journey toward wealth.
I was well aware that to genuinely attain financial success, I’d have to make substantial sacrifices along the way. I can assure you, it was no walk in the park. Yet, in the grand scheme of things, every sacrifice proved to be worthwhile.
In this narrative, I’ll unveil the 10 things I had to forgo in order to turn my dream of becoming a millionaire into reality.
1. Sacrifice Material Possessions
For more than a decade, I adhered to a stringent principle: if it wasn’t vital to my survival or business, I refrained from purchasing it. This meant no flashy gadgets, no designer attire, and no extravagant watches. My philosophy was straightforward: earn money, invest the majority, and judiciously manage the remainder.
Certainly, there were instances when my wife and I found ourselves financially strapped, despite earning more than most individuals. However, this was because we directed nearly all our earnings into investments. Sacrificing material possessions wasn’t a walk in the park, but it was a modest fee to secure our long-term financial freedom. After all, would you prefer to be a lion for a day and garner respect for a lifetime, or remain a sheep without honor for the rest of your days?
As Robert Kiyosaki once said, “Rich people buy luxuries last while poor people buy luxuries first.”
If you want to build wealth, you must have the discipline to sacrifice temporary pleasures and invest a significant percentage of your income.
2. Upgrade Your Circle
Life is too brief to spend time with individuals who don’t motivate you to become your best self. Hence, I resolved to sever connections with those genuinely impoverished individuals — those lacking ambition. Associating with individuals who incessantly complain and provide excuses only drags you down.
If you choose companions without ambition, your own ambition will dwindle. If you surround yourself with those waiting for a better economy to become wealthy, you’ll adopt the same mindset. It’s high time to elevate your social circle and immerse yourself in the company of individuals propelled toward success.
3. Give Up TV and Social Media
I’ve never purchased a television set in my entire life, and just last year, I opted to delete my sole social media account. Why, you ask? The answer is simple. Social media and TV possess an allure that can be detrimental. If your goal is wealth, you must exercise caution with distractions. Anything excessively captivating that doesn’t contribute to your income is essentially taking money away from you.
The reason you can easily spend hours in front of a TV or check your Instagram and Facebook profiles multiple times a day is because they’re intriguing. However, the predicament lies in the fact that the genuine aspects of life are often challenging and demanding. If wealth is your aim, you must be ready to tackle arduous tasks and take decisive action. So, should you delete all your social media profiles? No. But should you curtail the time spent on social media and TV? Absolutely, especially if wealth is your objective.
4. Sleep Less, Achieve More: The Simple Rule for Success
Let’s be honest; we all cherish our sleep. The cozy hug of our blankets and the sensation of drifting into dreamland are truly irresistible. However, if success is your aim, you must be willing to sacrifice some of that precious shut-eye. I’m not suggesting you rise at the crack of dawn, but striving to sleep less than the average person or waking up earlier can be a simple yet effective strategy to gain an edge in life. So, don’t hesitate to trade some sleep for the pursuit of your dreams.
Now, I’m not proposing an extreme measure like sleeping only three hours a night; that would be absurd. However, if you find yourself sleeping a generous nine hours a day, it might be worth reconsidering. Making a sacrifice in sleep can significantly impact your journey toward achieving your goals. So, the next time you catch yourself snoozing away the morning, ask, “Is this worth sacrificing my dreams for?” The answer, my friend, is entirely up to you.
5. Ditch the Blame Game
During my upbringing, it felt like everyone in my circle had a tendency to attribute their struggles to external factors—the government, the economy, or their parents. However, at the age of 17, I made a conscious decision to break free from this mindset. While placing blame on others might offer temporary relief, it doesn’t actually resolve your problems. To genuinely succeed, you must take complete ownership of your life and cease waiting for others to fix things for you.
The reality is that success won’t be handed to you on a silver platter. To realize your dreams, you must roll up your sleeves, dive into the work, and be prepared to make sacrifices along the journey. So, abandon the habit of pointing fingers and concentrate on what you can control. By assuming responsibility for your own life, you open the door to a realm of possibilities and can achieve feats you never deemed possible.
6. Conquering Fear
Embarking on my venture into the business realm marked a pivotal moment in my life. Despite being engulfed by fear, I recognized the imperative need to take action and carve a path for myself. Moments of doubt would occasionally surface, questioning my capacity for success.
Yet, I consciously chose to relinquish my fear of failure. I convinced myself that I would prefer to face the possibility of failure head-on than resign to a life of poverty. Understanding that fearlessness in the face of failure was a prerequisite for wealth, I acknowledged that failure is an inescapable facet of life, whether we opt for risk or not. Why not confront our fears and pursue our aspirations?
Life is too brief to be hindered by fear. Instead, one should embrace fears and stride confidently toward their objectives. While the business world may seem daunting, you can meet the challenge by shedding the fear of failure.
Take solace in the realization that even in failure, you acquire valuable experience that will prove beneficial in the future. So, refuse to be shackled by fears. Take that leap of faith and discover where it leads. The journey may be uncertain, but the potential rewards far outweigh the risks.
7. Forget About Shortcuts and Get-Rich-Quick Schemes
As Warren Buffet wisely put it, “You cannot have a baby next month by impregnating 9 women today.”
It’s a lighthearted analogy, but the underlying message is straightforward: worthwhile endeavors require time. While tales of overnight success may be enchanting, the reality is that they typically emerge after countless nights of unwavering effort and commitment. If you aspire to attain wealth, cultivating patience and persistency is crucial. Wealth accumulation isn’t an instantaneous process—it won’t occur overnight, next month, or even next year.
Cease the quest for get-rich-quick schemes or shortcuts. Though they may appear alluring, they often result in a more prolonged and challenging journey. Instead, concentrate on constructing a sturdy foundation for your success, advancing one step at a time. As the age-old saying reminds us, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Through sustained dedication and perseverance, you can reach your objectives and transform your dreams into reality.
8. Overcome Self-Doubt
What’s more impressive than being cool? Accomplishing your goals! And you know what’s even more impressive? Recognizing that others, just like you, have already achieved it. So, don’t let low self-esteem hinder your path to success. Refuse to be swayed by negative thoughts that suggest you can’t attain wealth, especially during challenging times. Instead of indulging in a pity party, embrace the potent, unstoppable version of yourself that has the power to change the world.
It’s time to make a sacrifice—not of your dreams, but of your self-doubt. The newfound you is capable of remarkable feats. Armed with a positive mindset, hard work, and determination, you can conquer anything you set your mind to.
9. Get Rich or Read Trying
While your school might have covered algebra and history, the art of getting rich wasn’t on the curriculum. It’s a bit disappointing, but the good news is that numerous financial experts have amassed substantial wealth and are eager to impart their secrets. That’s precisely why, at the age of 17, I delved into financial literature, and the journey hasn’t halted.
Admittedly, books may not be the most thrilling pursuit, but believe me, these particular ones are invaluable. If you’re aiming for financial freedom, learning from those who’ve already achieved it is essential. So, don’t dismiss books—they just might be the catalyst for a positive life change.
10. No Free Rides to Riches
The notion of an “easy life” is nothing more than a myth, straightforward and clear. Life is challenging, and there’s no indication it’ll become any easier—apologies for the reality check. However, instead of yearning for a smooth journey to wealth, you must be prepared to invest effort. If you’re not willing to make the necessary sacrifices, achieving wealth is simply not in the cards.
So, gear up and prepare to get your hands dirty because the path to prosperity is constructed from hard work and determination. Success won’t magically land in your lap—be ready to earn it. With the right mindset and a readiness to pay the price, you can accomplish anything you set your sights on.
