After her appearance in an episode of Apple’s Way, she was approached by producer Norman Lear to audition for the role of cooperative daughter Barbara Cooper in a new sitcom titled One Day at a Time. The show premiered in late 1975 when she was 15 years old. Bertinelli then appeared in 208 of the 209 episodes prior to the show leaving the air on May 28, 1984. She earned two Golden Globe Awards for her performance. In the 2005 One Day at a Time Reunion Special, she was reunited with fellow cast members Mackenzie Phillips, Bonnie Franklin, and Pat Harrington Jr. to watch memorable clips from the original program’s 9 seasons. They discussed actors who had exited the show and also Phillip’s drug problem, which had wreaked havoc on the set and led to him being fired from the show.
Following the run of One Day at a Time, she starred in various made-for-TV movies and miniseries. She also made numerous guest appearances on various television series. Bertinelli then starred in 2 short-lived sitcoms: Sydney, as the title character, a private detective (alongside Matthew Perry and Craig Bierko), and Cafe Americain in the 1990s. In 2001, she joined the cast of Touched by an Angel for the show’s final two seasons. She then became a spokeswoman for the Jenny Craig show and appeared in several commercials in 2007.
