Professional career
Oklahoma City Blue (2016-2017)
Following going undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft, he joined the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2016 NBA Summer League. Caruso then signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder on September 23, 2016, but was then waived on October 17. He was later acquired by the Oklahoma City Blue of the NBA Development League on November 3.
Los Angeles Lakers (2017-2021)
Alex joined the Lakers for the 2017 NBA Summer League. Following several productive games, he was signed to the Lakers’ first two-way deal on July 13, 2017. Caruso became the first player to go directly from the D-League to the NBA via a two-way deal. He assisted lead the Lakers to win the 2017 NBA Summer League Championship in Las Vegas. On October 19, 2017, he made his NBA debut against the Los Angeles Clippers. Caruso played 12 minutes and posted 2 points, 2 assists, and 1 rebound in a 108-92 loss. He also had a career-high 15 points and 7 rebounds in a win in the final game of the season against the Clippers.
Caruso then signed another two-way deal with the Lakers following a successful showing in the 2018 NBA Summer League. He later recorded a season-high 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in a 99-115 defeat by the Denver Nuggets on March 6, 2019. Caruso scored a new career-high 32 points in a 122-117 win against the Clippers on April 5. He became the only Laker that season other than LeBron James to post a 30+ point, 10+ rebound, 5+ assist game. Caruso later signed a two-year deal with the Lakers worth $5.5 million on July 6, 2019. On October 11, 2020, he won his first NBA championship with the team, when they beat the Miami Heat in 6 games. He then started the clinching game of the NBA Finals and became an unrestricted free agent following the 2020-21 season.
Chicago Bulls (2021-present)
Caruso signed a four-year, $37 million deal with the Chicago Bulls on August 10, 2021. During a 90-94 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, he was fouled by opposing guard Grayson Allen on January 21, 2022. Allen was then ejected from the game. The following day, the Bulls revealed that he had a fractured right wrist and would undergo surgery, keeping him out for at least 6-to-8 weeks.
