Who is Gregg Berhalter?
Gregg Matthew Berhalter is a recognized American professional soccer coach and former player. He was most recently the head coach of the United States men’s national soccer team. Gregg previously coached Columbus Crew SC in Major League Soccer, and Hammarby IF in Sweden, and worked as an assistant coach for LA Galaxy.

Playing career
Berhalter played college soccer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then spent the collegiate off-season playing for the Raleigh Flyers of the USISL in 1993. Gregg is the godson of Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame baseball player Carl Yastrzemski.
Professional
He left UNC following his junior year, signing with the Dutch club Zwolle in 1994. Berhalter then played for Sparta Rotterdam and SC Cambuur Leeuwarden in the Netherlands and with Crystal Palace in England. During his time at Crystal Palace, Gregg scored once against Bradford City. He signed with Energie Cottbus of the German Bundesliga in 2002. Berhalter then went on to make 111 league appearances with the team, captaining them to promotion back to the Bundesliga. In 2006, he signed with TSV 1860 Munich of the 2. Bundesliga, and was named captain of the team. He stayed there for two and a half more years, making 73 league appearances for Die Lowen.
Berhalter went back to the U.S. in April 2009, after a 15-year career in Europe. He then signed a deal with Major League Soccer, his first club deal in his home country. Berhalter was revealed as a Los Angeles Galaxy player on April 3, 2009. In his first season with the Galaxy, their goals against were cut in half with him being a leader in defense while mentoring Omar Gonzalez to Rookie of the Year honors. In his second season, the team won the MLS Supporters Shield and further reduced their goals against to 26 for the season, a Galaxy record. He then revealed his decision to retire at the end of the 2011 MLS season on October 12, 2011.
International
He received his first cap for the U.S. national team against Saudi Arabia on October 15, 1994. Berhalter then played a significant role for the U.S. at the 2002 World Cup, stepping in for the injured Jeff Agoos and starting the last two games. In doing this he became the first Crystal Palace player to play in a World Cup game. He was then added to the U.S. national team’s roster for the 2006 World Cup, taking the place of injured Cory Gibbs on May 25, 2006. However, the U.S. was eliminated following completing at the bottom of Group E in the first round with one draw and 2 losses.

Hammarby IF
After a season as Los Angeles Galaxy’s assistant coach, he was named head coach for Swedish club Hammarby IF on December 12, 2011. At the time, the club was playing in Superettan, the 2nd-tier. He was then fired for a ”lack of attacking play” on July 24, 2013.
Columbus Crew SC
Gregg became the sporting director and head coach of Columbus Crew on November 6, 2013. Under him, Columbus Crew SC qualified for the playoffs in 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. The team reached the MLS Cup 2015 but lost at home to the Portland Timbers by 2-1.
