High school career

Bouknight played high school basketball at La Salle Academy in Manhattan, New York. He averaged 17.4 points per game, guiding his team to the New York Federation Class B state championship as a junior. Bouknight was named the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP) and received Catholic High School Athletic Association B Division MVP and New York State Sportswriters Association Class B Player of the Year accolades.

Following the season, he reclassified down and transferred to MacDuffie School in Granby, Massachusetts to gain more exposure. He averaged 19.3 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists per game in his reclassified junior season, prior to suffering a season-ending torn meniscus in his left knee. College career

James was suspended for 3 games by UConn, on November 7, 2019, for allegedly fleeing a car crash on September 27. He had been charged with evading responsibility interfering with a police officer, traveling very fast for conditions, and operating a motor vehicle without a license. Bouknight then scored a freshman season-high 23 points in a 72-71 overtime victory against Cincinnati on February 9, 2020. In the second half and overtime, he scored 19 points and made 2 game-sealing free throws. After one day, he was named American Athletic Conference (AAC) Player of the Week. Bouknight had his first double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds in an 84-63 win against East Carolina on February 29. He then averaged 13 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game and was a Third Team All-AAC and All-Freshman Team pick as a freshman.

At the start of his sophomore season, he was named to the preseason John R. Wooden Award watch list. Bouknight then scored a career-high 40 points in a 76-74 overtime defeat to 9th-ranked Creighton, on December 20, 2020. He later suffered an elbow injury on January 5, 2021, against Marquette, and missed out on 8 games following undergoing surgery. Bouknight averaged 18.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, receiving First Team All-Big East honors as a sophomore. He then declared for the 2021 NBA Draft on March 31, forgoing the rest of his college eligibility.

Bouknight then scored his first NBA points in a 133-115 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, scoring 2 free throws in 4 minutes on November 26, 2021.
