High school career
Alvarado played basketball for Christ the King Regional High School in Middle Village, Queens in New York City. He averaged 17 points and 6.5 assists per game and was named Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Player of the Year as a junior. Alvarado recorded 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 steals, as a senior, in a December 22, 2016, victory against Xaverian High School. This was the first quadruple double in school history. In his senior season, he averaged 17.9 points per game and led Christ the King to the CHSAA intersectional quarterfinals. Alvarado was then named TimesLedger Player of the Year.
Recruiting
He was considered a 4-star recruit by Rivals and ESPN, and a 3-star recruit by 247Sports in the 2017 class. He then committed on September 5, 2016, to play college basketball for Georgia Tech against offers from Seton Hall and Rutgers, among others. Georgia Tech head coach Josh Pastner had first seen him at the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League.
College career
Alvarado began in all 25 of his games and averaged 12.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game as a freshman. He became the 4th Georgia Tech freshman to average at least 12 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. Jose then suffered a season-ending left elbow fracture against Duke on February 11, 2018. He had an increased role in his sophomore season with the early exit of Josh Okogie. Alvarado then scored a career-high 29 points to go with 6 rebounds and 5 assists in a 73-65 victory against Pittsburgh on February 20, 2019.
He averaged 12.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, leading his team in scoring, assists, and steals as a sophomore. Georgia Tech was then banned from the postseason by the NCAA during his junior season because of several infractions. Alvarado missed 7 games early in his junior season because of an ankle injury. He then scored a season-high 26 points and recorded 8 rebounds and a school-record 9 steals in a 64-58 win against NC State on January 25, 2020.
Alvarado averaged 14.4 points, 4 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game in his junior season. He was also named to the Third Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Jose and Moses Wright led Georgia Tech to its first ACC title since 1993 in his senior year, by beating Scottie Barnes and Florida State in the championship game of the ACC tournament. At the conclusion of the season, Alvarado was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

He passed on gaining an additional year in college because of COVID-19 game cancellations and declared himself eligible for the 2021 NBA draft. Following being undrafted, he signed a 2-way deal with the New Orleans Pelicans on August 19, 2021. Under the terms of the contract, Alvarado split time with the Pelicans and their NBA G League affiliate, the Birmingham Squadron. In a game over the Philadelphia 76ers, he was issued a technical foul after an in-game verbal altercation with Philadelphia center Joel Embiid on January 25, 2022. The incident earned press coverage following Embiid praising him and paid the $2,000 league fine associated with it.
His two-way deal was converted into a standard 4-year, $6.5 million deal on March 28, 2022. The signing made him eligible for post-season play. He then scored a career-high 38 points in a 121-106 victory against the Denver Nuggets on December 4, 2022.
