Malik Ahmad Monk is a popular American professional basketball player for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Monk played one season of college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats, receiving consensus second-team All-American honors in 2017. He was picked in the first round of the 2017 NBA draft with the 11th overall selection by the Charlotte Hornets. Monk has also played for the Los Angeles Lakers.

High school career

Malik attended East Poinsett County High School in Lepanto, Arkansas for his freshman year. He averaged 22.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game as a freshman. Monk led them to a (25-8) overall record and an appearance in the Class 2A state championship game. Following his freshman season, he transferred to Bentonville High School in Bentonville Arkansas. He averaged 26.6 points per game in his junior year. Monk then competed for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team, Arkansas Wings Elite, on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball Circuit (EYBL), where he averaged 19.7 points per game in the spring and summer of 2015.

Monk later competed on the 2015 Nike Global Challenge for the East team, averaging 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 assists in addition to earning Tournament MVP honors. He committed to Kentucky, choosing the UK over Arkansas on November 18, 2015. He then averaged 28.6 points per game, 4.4 assists per game, and 7.6 rebounds per game as a senior. Monk later played in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic, where he received Co-MVP honors together with Kentucky teammate De’Aaron Fox.

He played his final high school game, scoring 19 points in a 59-49 defeat in the 7A state championship to Cabot High School, on March 11, 2016. Monk was a consensus five-star prospect and ranked as one of the best players in the 2016 class by the 4 main recruiting services: ESPN, Scout, Rivals, and 247 Sports. He was rated as the No. 9 overall player and No.1 shooting guard in the 2016 high school class.

College career

Malik tweeted that he would be attending the University of Kentucky on November 18, 2015. He set a University of Kentucky freshman scoring record with 47 points in a victory against the University of North Carolina on December 17, 2016. After 12 days, Monk scored 34 points on five-for-seven three-point shooting in a 99-76 victory against Ole Miss. He then scored 27 points in an 85-69 victory against South Carolina on January 21, 2017. Monk scored 37 points over Georgia Bulldogs on January 31, 2017.

On February 25, 2017, he tallied 33 points in a 76-66 win against Florida. He then scored 27 points in a 73-67 victory against Vanderbilt on February 28, 2017. At the conclusion of his freshman season, he was named SEC Player and Freshman of the Year, while also being named to the 2017 teal All-SEC and the SEC All-Freshman team. At the end of his freshman season, he revealed that he would forgo his last 3 years of collegiate eligibility and join the 2017 NBA draft where he was projected as a first-round pick.

Charlotte Hornets (2017-2021)

He was picked with the 11th overall selection in the 2017 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets on June 22, 2017. Monk then signed his rookie scale deal with the Hornets worth $15,726,047 on July 2, 2017. He would miss the whole of the 2017 NBA Summer League because of an ankle injury. On October 25, 2017, in his 4th game, he recorded 17 points, 2 steals, and 2 assists in a 110-93 win over the Denver Nuggets. With Kentucky coach John Calipari on hand, he scored 25 points in a 126-121 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on November 1, 2017.

In his rookie season, he was assigned to the Hornets’ NBA G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm, for one game. Monk scored 25 points and posted 8 rebounds and 4 assists in a December 26, 2017 game. He was then suspended indefinitely for violating the NBA’s substance use policy on February 26, 2020. Prior to the suspension, he was averaging 10.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. Monk was then reinstated on June 8, after it was determined he was in compliance with the anti-drug program. He later scored a then career-high 36 points in a 129-121 overtime victory against the Heat.

Los Angeles Lakers (2021-2022)

Malik signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on a trade exception salary deal on August 6, 2021. He then put up a career-high 41 points in a 146-141 victory against the Denver Nuggets on April 10, 2022.

Sacramento Kings (2022-present)

Monk signed a 2-year, $19 million deal with the Sacramento Kings on July 6. 2022.
