Who is Tage Thompson?

Tage Nathaniel Thompson is a famous American professional ice hockey center for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was picked 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Playing career

Following playing in the U.S. National Development Team in the United States Hockey League, he embarked on a collegiate career with Connecticut in the Hockey East conference. He then appeared in all 36 games in his freshman season at UConn in 2015-16. Thompson was the second on the team with 32 points on 14 goals and 18 assists. He then led the nation with 14 power-play goals.

In the 2016-17 season, and following his selection by the Blues in the draft, he appeared in 34 games with the Huskies as a sophomore. Thompson missed 2 games while taking part with Team USA in the IIHF World Junior U20 Championship in Canada. There he ended up earning his second Gold Medal. In his 34 games, he led the Huskies with 19 goals and 32 points. He decided to end his collegiate career and signed a 3-year, entry-level deal with the St. Louis Blues on March 7, 2017. Thompson immediately joined the Blues affiliate the Chicago Wolves of the AHL, on an amateur try-out deal for the rest of the 2016-17 season.

2017-present

He then made his NHL debut in the Blues’ first game of the 2017-18 season, over the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 4, 2017. Thompson played four NHL games prior to being sent down to the San Antonio Rampage on October 13, 2017. He was then recalled to the NHL on December 18, 2017, and scored his first NHL goal after 3 days in a 3-2 loss over the Edmonton Oilers. Thompson was part of an exchange by the Blues that sent Patrick Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, a 2019 first-round draft pick, and a 2021 second-round draft selection to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Ryan O’Reilly.

He then signed a three-year, $4.2 million deal extension with the Sabres as a restricted agent on October 5, 2020. Joining a season with low expectations for the Sabres, he enjoyed a breakthrough season playing on the top line with Jeff Skinner and new acquisition Alex Tuch scoring 38 goals and 68 points in 78 games. Thompson then scored 5 goals in a game including 4 in the first period, against the Columbus Blue Jackets on December 7, 2022. He became the 4th player in NHL history to do so. Thompson’s 5 goals also tied the Sabres franchise record for goals in a game, joining Dave Andreychuk.
