Tyler Shaan Adams is a famous American professional footballer who plays for Premier League club Leeds United and captains the United States national team. Mainly s midfielder, he is able to play as a fullback or winger on either side of the defense or midfield.

Adams is a homegrown player of the New York Red Bulls academy, and turned pro with the New York Red Bulls II as a 16-year-old. He then joined the New York Red Bulls’ first team after one season. Adams then joined RB Leipzig in January 2019. He later joined Leeds United after three and a half years in July 2022. In 2012. he joined the Red Bulls Academy and played with the under-13, under-14, and under-16 sides prior to turning pro. Before joining the New York Red Bulls Academy, he played with Ironbound Soccer Club, a NY Red Bulls affiliate academy based in Newark, NJ.

New York Red Bulls II

Tyler was signed to New York Red Bulls II, the club’s senior reserve team playing in the United Soccer League on March 19, 2015. He then made his debut for the team in a 4-1 win against Toronto FC on April 4, 2015, the first win in club history. Following appearing regularly for NYRB II during the 2016 season, he assisted the club to a 5-1 win against Swope Park Rangers in the 2016 USL Cup Final.

New York Red Bulls

Adams made his debut with the New York Red Bulls’ first team featuring in a friendly match against Premier League champions Chelsea on July 23, 2015. He scored the 2nd goal of the match, slotting a header past Asmir Begovic in the 69th minute as the Red Bulls continued to win 4-2. On November 3, 2015, he signed his first senior team deal and joined the first team in preseason training camp in 2016. He then made his first MLS bench appearance as an unused substitute during a 1-0 defeat by the New England Revolution on April 1, 2016. On April 13 he also made his MLS debut, starting over the San Jose Earthquakes, prior to returning to Red Bulls II on loan for the rest of the season.

Tyler then emerged as a regular starter for the Red Bulls senior team in the 2017 season. He assisted New York to a 3-2 come-from-behind win against FC Cincinnati, assisting on Bradley Wright-Phillips’s 77th-minute equalizer on August 15, 2017. With the victory, New York made it to their first Open Cup final since 2003. He then scored his first two MLS goals in a 3-3 draw with D.C. United on September 27, 2017. Adams later opened the scoring for New York in a 3-1 win against Club Tijuanan on March 13, 20o18. He assisted the club make it to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time.

RB Leipzig

2019 season

In January 2019, he joined RB Leipzig, reuniting with former coach Jesse Marsch. Adams then made his first league start in a 4-0 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf on January 27. He recorded his first Bundesliga assist in a 3-1 win against Stuttgart on February 16. Adams then missed the whole of April games because of an abductor injury, and until then Leipzig had not lost a single game with him on the field. He came back to the team on May 16, and after 11 days, he started the DFB-Pokal final over Bayern Munich to which Leipzig lost 0-3.

2019-20 season

For the summer of 2019 and the first half of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season, Adams was sidelined by a groin injury. He came back for the last game prior to winter break, playing 86 minutes in a 3-1 win against FC Augsburg. Adams then made his UEFA Champions League debut in the 2nd leg game over Tottenham Hotspur on March 10. He entered in the 56th minute as a substitute for Nordi Mukiele who sustained a head injury. Adams then missed the first leg because of a minor calf injury. The game ended 3-0 (4-0 on aggregate) with Leipzig winning and advancing to the next round. He then scored the winning goal for the club in a 2-1 victory against Atletico Madrid on August 13, 2020. Adams assisted the club advance to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

Leeds United

Tyler joined Leeds United on July 6, 2022, on a five-year deal for a reported £20 million transfer fee. He then made his league debut for the club as part of the starting line-up in their season opener, a 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 6.

International career

He has represented the United States at the under-15, under-17, and under-20 levels. Adams appeared in all of his team’s matches at the 2015 CONCACAF Under-17 Championships in Honduras, assisting the U.S. to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup. He played every game for the U.S. at the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in South Korea in May 2017. Adams then received his first cap for the senior national team, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw with Portugal, on November 14, 2017. On September 11, 2018, he scored a goal against Mexico in a friendly at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.

He was then named to the squad for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, in June 2019, but was forced to withdraw because of an injury. In November 2022, he was named captain of the U.S. team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This made Adams the youngest captain at the competition and the youngest American captain since 1950.
