From 2015 to 2017, Nyheim played at NC State under head coach Dave Doeren, In 2017, he rushed for 1,112 yards on 197 carries with 12 touchdowns as a junior. In the next game, he scored his first professional touchdown, an eight-yard rush in a 21-9 win against the Washington Redskins. Hines then had 9 receptions for 63 receiving yards and 2 receiving touchdowns in the overtime loss against the Houston Texans in Week 4.
