Anita Marie Pointer was a famous American singer-songwriter, recognized as a founding member of the vocal group the Pointer Sisters. Both tracks were from the 1983 album Break Out, which attained triple-platinum status. Other Pointer Sisters’ tracks consist of ”He’s So Shy” (1980) and ”Neutron Dance” (1984), which was popularized in the opening scene of the movie Beverly Hills Cop. They then had 13 top-20 pop hits in the United States from 1973 to 1985.
1986-2015
Pointer found chart success with country superstar Earl Thomas Conley on the song ”Too Many Times”, which attained No. 2 on the country chart in 1986. In 1987, Pointer launched her first solo album, Love for What It Is. Pointer’s album’s first track, ”Overnight Success”, attained No. 41 on the Billboard R&B chart. A second song from the album, More Than a Memory, also charted, attaining No. 73 R&B in 1988. She and her sisters earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994, and in 1998, she was singularly inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame. Pointer then retired from the Pointer Sisters after medical problems after chemotherapy in 2015.
She launched the book, Fairytale: The Pointer Sisters’ Family which was co-written with her brother, Fritz Pointer in February 2020. The book chronicles the Pointer family’s origins and history and also finds themselves as young black women in the San Francisco Bay Area during the Civil Rights and Black Power movement of the late 1960s. In addition to describing the difficulties and successes, they encountered throughout their career and sharing their chart history, discography, and other surprises along the way. Throughout the book, family members also share their memories of the Pointer family history such as Bonnie, who passed in June 2020. The book then received positive reviews upon launch.
Health and Death
Pointer was supposed to be a contestant on season 6 of The Masked Singer in October 2021, as part of a duet with her sister Ruth. Ruth, however, revealed that Anita had not performed due to her dealing with an illness. Pointer then died on December 31, 2022, from cancer at her home in Beverly Hills, California, 24 days prior to her 75th birthday.
